Places to Visit

Here are a few of the more hidden places to visit on the Island.

THE WEST COAST SHIPWRECK TO KERI

NAVAGIO - Shipwreck

T
his beautiful bay is situated to the west of the island and is only accessible by sea.  You can however stand at the top of the cliffs where a viewing balcony has been assembled.  The best way to see the bay is to take one of the many tourist boats that go there in the summer, you can then swim in the translucent blue water. The large boats go from Zante Town but smaller ones go from resorts in the North.  I would suggest going from Porto Vromi, it is the nearest place to Shipwreck and you can also see how rough the sea is as Vromi is on the same side of the island as Navagio.

PORTO VROMI

Porto Vromi nestles on the west coast it consists of two separate bays one can be reached from Maries and the other from Anafonitria.  Both have small boats anchored in the shelter of the Bay.  Legend say's that the two Mary's on there way to Rome to protest about Christ's death were stranded here.  The locals were so impressed with their teachings of Christ that the town was named after them.  There is a small beach at both Bays and you can swim in the beautiful clear waters.

KAMBI

Still travelling south and off the main road, signs will direct you to the sunset restaurants all boasting the best views on the island to watch the sun setting.  You have reached  Kambi. Follow the road right up to the large Cross and you will find a Taverna with wonderful views and the food isn't bad either.

We have finally managed to get up to Kambi in the evening and yes, the sunsets are great as I am sure you can see from picture on the left.

LIMNIONAS

Also on the west coast further south than Vromi lies the bay of Limnionas and the coast of Porto Roxa.  These can be reached from Exo Hora.  The bay at Limnionas is very popular for swimming in the very clear water.  There is also a Greek Taverna that has beautiful views over the bay and the Ionian Sea.

PORTO ROXA

Porto Roxa is just a short distance along the coast, again there are two Tavernas and you can swim in the small bay where a few boats may be anchored or in the sea itself.  Can you spot the diving board just visible on the left side of the picture.

KERI

Continuing our journey down the west coast we will find the town of Keri.   If you drive to through the Town you come to Keri Lighthouse (it does look more like a house) Leaving Keri and continuing on the main road you will find Keri Lake.  These two villages form the southern westerly leg of the island with Keri looking over the Ionian Sea and Keri Lake over the westerly end of Lagana Bay.
You may think there should be a Lake at Keri but no, the lake was drained some years ago.
