Places to Visit
THE EAST COAST FROM SKINARI TO
ZAKYNTHOS TOWN
SKINARI & AGIOS NIKOLAOS
At the farthest
north of the island is Skinari there
you can see the ruin of the old lighthouse
this was destroyed in the
earthquake of 1953. If you look across the water you will see our
neighbouring island of Kefalonia.
In summer there are a couple of Taverna's
open and you can also stay in an old fashioned windmill.
Further South down the East Coast
you will find the port of Agios Nikolaos, here you can catch the ferry to Kefalonia they leave twice a
day morning and evening. You can also get a glass bottom boat to the
Blue Caves and if you wish, go further on round the head land to
'shipwreck'. One word of warning the sea can
be very calm on the East coast but the short journey round the headland
it could change and be very rough on the West coast. Boats also leave from other
resorts but the shortest trip to the Blue Caves is from Agios Nikolaos.
LONG BEACH
Travelling south you come to this
small white shingle beach on the right. Long Beach. The
picture on the left is taken in the hills above the bay.
There is a restaurant which I think is open all day and some sun
beds on the beach. This would be a normal stop for some of
the Jeep Safari's. It is also possible to take a boat to
the Blue caves from here.
XINGI & SULPHUR BEACH
As we travel
further south we come to the sulphur beach. The sulphur
beach lives up to its name it is very easy to get down to but
fairly smelly. Further along is Xingi, there is now a
reasonable track down to the beach. Xingi is also a favourite stop for some of
the big boats who use it as a swim stop, especially if it is rough on the the
West Coast and can't stop at Shipwreck.
The road now
winds along the coast with views over the sea and mountains.
There are a few viewing points along this road where you can
stop and take in the resort town of Ailkes, and Alikanas. The
main road will lead you into the second biggest town on the island Katastari.
AMOUDI
Further south we
find our way to the hidden beach of Amoudi.
Sandy beach, no sun beds or umbrellas, but beautiful clear water and
quiet. There is a lovely Taverna at one end of the beach and a
couple more around set in gardens. This is one of my
favourite places where you can just lay and relax, not at all
touristy and your companions will probably be Greeks.
After Amoudi there are several small beaches
down tracks to hidden inlets where fisherman boats will be
moored. A few hidden away restaurants a lot serving fresh
fish. As you progress south the next big resort will be
Tsillvi. Much larger than its rivals further north but
possibly not as big as Laganas. More about Tsilivi on
resorts page. |
