Places to Visit
LAGANAS BAY
Laganas Bay in the
South of the island curves round from Vassilikos to Keri Lakes. The whole
area is a Marine Park and is the home of the endangered Loggerhead Turtles
'Caretta Caretta'. Turtles The main and probably the most well know resort is Lagana. It is
also the largest resort on the island the other main resort along the bay
is the more family orientated Kalamaki. (more about Lagana and
Kalamaki on the resorts page). Resorts
Leaving first Kalamaki and then Lagana we
come to:-
THE HARBOUR OF
AGIOS SOSTIS & CAMEO ISLAND
At the far end of Laganas,
towards the west coast is the small island of Cameo and the fishing
marina of Agios Sostis. Cameo Island is reached by a small rickety
bridge. It is a night club at night but during the day there is a
small beach where you can swim and a bar and snacks. This harbour is
where you can get the new Yellow Submarine that glides around the
bay turtle spotting.
AGIOS SOSTIS
From the Harbour there is a path along the waters edge if you
take this you will come to the small resort of Agios Sostis. This small resort is great if you like the quiet life but sometimes want
to venture into noisier territory. The beach here is very small but
the restaurants stand along the sea front with great views of the
bay. For the nights when you want to live it up you can walk along
the beach to Lagana.
KERI LAKE
Hugging the bay
around the most southerly part of the island we come to Keri Lake and Marathia. There are some great views to be had if you take the road
past the small marina and head up into Skopos. I would suggest a 4x4 for
this climb. At Keri Lake there is a small
sandy beach and further along it reverts to shingle. A
few nice restaurants and bars. From the small harbour
you can take a boat to Keri Caves.
You may think there should be a Lake at Keri but no, the lake was drained
some years ago.
MARATHONISI
ISLAND
Marathonisi Island where you may see the
Turtles. Boating restrictions are in force although this part of the
bay only has speed restrictions.
The boats will take you to the caves and small beach at the
back of the island. The main beach at the front is
Turtle nesting and should not be visited.
