Places to Visit ZAKYNTHOS TOWN
Zakynthos Town the capital of the island lies on the east coast. It is also the islands port where you can get a Ferry to the mainland and during the season you can also get one of the many tour boats that go all around the island. The islands patron Saint is Dionysios and the church of Aghios Dionysios stands on the water front of the port. Solomou Square at the far end of the town pays host to the Museum of Byzantine Art. Further along is the square of Aghios Markos, where you will find shops and restaurants and to the left is the main shopping area of the town, Alexandrou Roma. THE CHURCH OF ST. DIONISIOS The church stands at the southern point of the K Lombardou, Saint Dionisios is the the patron Saint of the island, you will find many Zakynthian men named Dionisios (Dennis). The church is well worth a visit to view the superb wall paintings with scenes from the life of the Saint. The saints memory is celebrated twice a year on 24th August, the date when his remains were brought from Strophades where he lived a monastic life and on 17th December when he died in 1624. LADY OF THE ANGELS The church of the Lady of the Angels, consecrated to the Virgin Mary. It was built in 17th century, but was destroyed in the earthquake of 1953, but has since been rebuilt. The little church has many notable wood carvings. ROMAS MANSION Next to the church is the Romas mansion. This has been recently renovated and is now a museum, it still belongs to the Romas family. The easiest way to find the Mansion and the church is to walk along the waters front past Solomos Square away from the main town. The mansion has access from the main road and there is a sign pointing to it if you come out of the Mansion at the exit away from the main road you will find the church on your left. SOLOMOS SQUARE & AGHIOS NICHOLAS ON THE MOLE Located at the other end of K. Lomardou, you will find Solomos Square, the Church of Saint Nicholas, is the oldest building on the square, it survived the earthquake and subsequent fires of 1953 but the stone has since been renovated. The Square is also the home of the Museum of Byzantine Art.
